About Digital Mandhwane

Decolonial Digital Transformation Rooted in African Wisdom

Traditional beadwork craftsmanship

Digital Mandhwane offers a decolonial approach to digital transformation by centring African knowledge systems and foregrounding community agency. Developed by Dr Kgopotso Ditshego Magoro , Digital Mandhwane draws on the philosophy of Mandhwane to promote digital literacy and skills development. Just as our ancestors used traditional Mandhwane to pass down wisdom and sustain communities, Digital Mandhwane aims to prepare children for their future digital roles while ensuring their digital journey is one of confidence, curiosity, and community strength.

The Philosophy of Digital Mandhwane

Digital Mandhwane draws on African traditions to shape ways of being, knowing, doing, and leading in the digital era. At its core is the African proverb Rutang bana ditaola, le se ye le tšona badimong , which means the intentional transfer of wisdom, knowledge, and skills to the younger generation. This African approach to knowledge creation is not only deliberate and community-based but also forward-thinking, paving the way for a sustainable, tech-enabled future.

Guided by the African proverb, le kobjwa le sa le meetse, which stresses the importance of shaping young minds early, the Digital Mandhwane framework equips children with the digital skills they need for the 21st century. Just as our ancestors used traditional Mandhwane to pass down wisdom and sustain communities, the Digital Mandhwane aims to prepare children for their future digital roles as ethical leaders, innovators, and active contributors in the digital and learning economy. It aims to nurture children's confidence, curiosity, and sense of community in digital environments, while grounding their learning in the core values of the analogue Mandhwane—such as learning by doing, trial and error, frugal innovation, prototyping, teamwork, and collaboration.
